Thor: Ragnarok - What the First Teaser Trailer Tells Us
The first trailer for the third film in the Thor series, and the 17th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was released yesterday and it easily looks like the best Thor film yet. The previous Thor films, although good, I felt never really could compete with the other Marvel movies in terms of greatness.
The trailer starts out with Thor chained up in a fiery place. This is most likely one of the nine realms and my guess is it is Muspelheim. This is where the demon Surtur resides and the concept art at Comic Con showed Thor fighting the large, flaming demon, so this makes the most sense. Thor's hammer, the Mjolnir, is then stopped by Hela (Cate Blanchett), starts to crack, and then explodes. If Thor is the only one worthy to wield the Mjolnir how did she stop it, and then destroy it?
We then see the Mjolnir completely decimated on screen and I can't help but think this is where Thor seeks out Doctor Strange's help as we saw in the post credits during the Doctor Strange movie.
Hela is then seen standing in front of an army of Asgardians to which she says, "Asgard is dead." We then see a bad ass blade she has in her hands and then the city of Asgard is being swept by a tide of flames. The movie title "Ragnorak" means the end of all things, so this makes sense that Asgard might suffer devastation and most likely extinction.
We then see Thor on a junkyard planet called Sakaar. We do not know how he ends up there but in the shot you can see some type of portals in the sky. Thor is then shot with a net and appears to be taken prisoner by Valkyrie (Tess Thompson). We later find out she captures him and takes him to The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) as a contender for the gladiator arena.
It also appears we will get some back story on Valkyrie. In the comics Valkyrie is a part of a group of nine warrior goddesses who ride winged horses known as the Valkyrior.
Back to Thor, after being captured it appears he gets a haircut?
The Grandmaster then asks Valkyrie what she has brought him, and she responds, "A contender." The trailer then cuts to a a warrior slicing the head off of someone who looks like Hela, but obviously isn't. We then see the warrior and it's our favorite Bifrost watch dog, Heimdall (Idris Alba). But he looks nothing like we are used to seeing him. No gold armor, long hair, he looks like he has been through a lot.
We then see Skruge the Executioner (Karl Urban) in a quick shot. He has two automatic rifles, which is exactly how he looks in the comics, but it is just weird to see guns in a Thor movie.
We then see Loki (Tom Hiddleston) as he walks across a bridge. Unclear whether he is on Asgard and who he is looking at as he tosses a couple daggers in the air. Also, who or what are those things behind him? Last we saw Loki he was ruling Asgard pretending to be Odin. Is he defending Asgard against Hela?
We then see Thor with a new haircut and some warpaint on his face. We hear The Grandmaster say, "It's main event time." As a door begins to open to reveal his opponent he puts on a new helmet that has the iconic wings of the Thor helmet but looks like it belongs in the Tron movies. Out of the door comes the Incredible Hulk decked out in some armor gear of his own. Thor then screams, "Yes!". He looks at The Grandmaster, where Loki is sitting next to him and looks worried, laughs and says, "We know each other. He's a friend from work." I'm assuming Thor's version of work is being part of the Avengers, which is a weird way of describing a group of superheroes who save the world.
Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) then growls and starts running toward Thor. I think Hulk knows he has to keep an appearance and pretend like he doesn't know Thor or he may be in trouble on Sakaar and with The Grandmaster. Which means we will get to see Thor and the Hulk battle it out in the arena.
The trailer looks great and I hope the rumors are true and we get to see a lot of the Hulk in this movie since we will probably never see a stand alone Hulk movie again due to legal rights.
Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to be released on November, 3rd, 2017 in IMAX.
